Sunday in Waveland

Here we are, in Waveland, Mississippi @ Buccaneer State Park. At a beautiful bay area of the Gulf Shores. What a beautiful waterfront view we have. Going to ride our bikes for a mid afternoon dinner and drinks at Cuz's Old Town Oyster Bar. 

We have been busy and are enjoying our 2 nights stays that give us a day to relax. Although we've gotten a routine down pat, no domestics issues to date. 

We have been busy staying active even on driving days. We've driven 1,643 miles, but we've walked 11.2 miles and rode our bikes 42.1 miles. 

We ended our stay @ Fort Novosel with a Bald eagle flying over a few times. We then traveled to Destin Army Recreation area. A very small facility right on the water. Destin seems very touristy and upbeat, reminded me of Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head.  Weather wasn't great, but we walked to McGuire's Pub and had a great meal and drinks. We were able to enjoy a morning walk and view of the waterfront before leaving to Waveland. We've met some nice campers, both in Fort Novosel and Destin, who've been doing this fill time and some for over 20 years.

Next stop Poche's RV park in Breaux Bridge, LA...... CAJUN COUNTRY! 

One Week In!

So.....this retirement and RV'ing thing doesn't suck! 

I'm sitting in 75 degree sunshine, looking out at Lake Tholocco @ Fort Novosel. We're visiting our nephew, 2nd LT Ben Read, a blackhawk pilot in training here. 

We left you at Parris Island, SC. We had a great time, despite the sand flies (PTSD was paramount). Boy have we become soft! We biked over 21 miles and did several miles walking. Shopped at the Exchange and Commissary, and was always waiting to be yelled at by some Marine DI! Visited the Parris Island Museum and met a volunteer who had a verty similar story to our meeting and has been married to a Woman Marine for years! They resettled back at Parris Island upon retirement. Was especially meaningful to us to hear someone else similar to our love story! 

We left Parris Island and had nice long drive to Fort Benning, now Fort Moore, because we gotta change every historical place's name. We were right on the Chattahoochee RIver, didn't seen Alan Jackson, but we did see Ben's friend 2nd LT Brandon Wasley, who we had come with us to Aruba! Had a great meal and visit, listening to his stories of what he experienced so far! Gotta support our troops!

Then on to Fort Novosel. Drove form Georgia/Alabama line to here, outside Enterprise, Alabama to see Ben! Was a very beautiful off the beaten path drive, in no man's land. Saw lots of old plantations that were falling apart and some had what we think might have been slave houses that were crumbling as well. Sad to see this. 

Eufala was a beautiful renovated little town. Would like to stop back by there someday! Off to enjoy today's sunshine and maybe a visit later with Ben! 

March 4th

 GOOD MORNING PARRIS ISLAND! 

Well it's been a couple of days since our last post. Since leaving the vineyard in PA, we got the windshield chip fixed and went on our way to Fort Belvoir, VA. It was little bit of a hectic drive with traffic but we arrived to a beautiful double loop campground on the Army base right on the Potomac. Unfortunately, clouds set in and rain later that evening so we weren't able to see a lot there, but would definitely return.

We woke up on Saturday morning and made our way to North Carolina! Both Tommie & Rob were born in NC and Tom & I lived here in our early military lives together. I've always had a special place in my heart for North Carolina!

We made our way to North Carolina State Fairgrounds campground in Raleigh, to see our niece, Emily! We had a great visit and ended up @ Wilson's Eatery for a fun dinner and drinks!  

Our first Buc-cee's!

Once we hit South Carolina, we visited our first Buc-cee's! It is an intense experience. They must've had at least 30-50 gas pumps and a convenience store the size of a walmart! We're true RVer's now that we visited a Buc-cee's!

We then traveled to MCRD (Marine Corps Recruit Depot) Parris Island, SC were both Tom and myself had boot camp almost 41 years ago! it was quite surreal driving onto the island in daylight, as the last time was at about 3 AM in the dark!

We had a full day of driving and had a nice walk, then dinner and fire while fighting off the onset of sand fleas..... having a bit of a PTSD moment or two from boot camp! Forgot about those little nasty biters! It was in the low 70's and we weren't ready for that big temperature change, but I'll take it.

First Day!

Traveled to Perkasie, PA to Bishop Estate Vineyard & Winery! Along the way, got a nice big windshield chip, smack dab in the center view of the driver’s side, but are getting it plugged this AM before heading out! We spent the afternoon enjoying a wine tasting and bottle at this vineyard. We passed through horse and farm country of western NJ & upper PA. Very beautiful! Had a few friends in the field this morning while we had coffee. Off to Fort Belvoir, VA this afternoon!
